"Betta fish serve as a specific symbolic choice within this painting. Betta fish are known to battle or cannibalize each other if placed in a small tank together. It calls to mind the same pressure our culture sets for women seeking respect and upward mobility in the careers. Women are often made to battle or compete for such limited positions. But what if rather than battle, they uplifted? What if we traded competition for collaboration? It would be like a group of Betta fish teaming together rather than tearing each other apart... like a new school of fish. A new school of thought. A new power. This is a painting about THAT power."
